The European Union declared sustainable development one of the priority areas of development in the coming period. Accordingly, the member states of the European Union are trying to introduce awareness of sustainable development in their schools. In order for our students to better develop their competencies for sustainable development, one group of teachers went on job shadowing, where they acquired the competencies necessary for the application of sustainable development in teaching. In schools in Italy there is no special subject sustainable development, but sustainable development is a practice that is ubiquitous in schools. In Gambettola Elementary School, which the teachers visited, sustainable development is visible in every corner of the school; students come to school with bicycles, they have their own garden that they cultivate, they make a lot of objects from recycled materials. Furthermore, they sort waste, do homework and posters on the topic of sustainability, and cooperate with numerous associations and local institutions. In the Republic of Croatia, sustainable development is present in Croatian education through the cross-curricular theme of sustainable development. The teachers who were on job shadowing, as well as the other teachers who were on mobility, as well as all the other teachers of the school, intensively dealt with sustainable development and incorporated it into their curricula. They launched various projects at the school level and in cooperation with the local community, all with the aim of encouraging sustainability. We will cite just a few examples: learning to sort waste, making artistic pictures from recycled material, cooperation with the local community, humanitarian actions, green actions, posters about recycling, etc.
