St. Nicholas in the Home

On St. Nikola’s day pupils of the 5th A grade who are attending the optional subject of Catholic Religious Education under the guidance of the religion teacher visited the Home for the Elderly "Domenico Pergolis" Rovinj. Trained in St. Nikola, Krampus and their helpers visited the users of the Home and cheered them up with company and conversation, but also distributed candies and paper whips they made themselves. It was another example of cooperation between the school and the Home to the mutual satisfaction of the users of the Home and the pupils!

Project on determining the state of environmental awareness of the school

The sixth graders and their teachers started the project "Environmental awareness of the school". The goal of the project is to activate pupils in creating a sustainable environment and increasing awareness of the importance of sustainable development in everyday life. The pupils visited the Communal Service of the City of Rovinj and heard firsthand how waste is disposed of. Today, they had a workshop in class, with which they started researching the environmental awareness of the school. Pupils first worked individually, then in pairs, and finally in groups. They were given the task of working out how we deal with the following things in school, what are the challenges and possible solutions for handling water, old batteries, waste and paper. Some of the pupils' suggestions were: battery containers, solar panels, recycling bins, using tablets instead of paper, recycling waste at brunch, etc. It was just the beginning of the project, these initial ideas are followed by research and ultimately the initiation of changes in the school lives of pupils, of course in the spirit of sustainable development!

Sustainable decorations

Christmas time is a time of family, giving, decorating and much more. The pupils of our school, under the guidance of the Art teacher, showed how Christmas is also a time to think about planet Earth. Why buy new decorations when you can make them from old items? With a little good will and a little more creativity, the pupils made beautiful decorations and a pine tree, and in addition to the Christmas spirit, they brought the spirit of sustainable development to our school. They made the baskets from the pages of old books and old cardboard boxes that they cut and painted, while the pine is made from chipboard that was intended for waste. Congrats to the pupils and the teacher!

English is fun!

Pupils love technology and the English teacher used this information for motivation and active learning. She introduced the pupils to the "Esl activities" application, which they immediately liked. Each student received his own tablet on which he had the opportunity to practice vocabulary. The teacher showed the pupils how technology can be used for didactic purposes and how playing can actually be learning at the same time. When asked how they like this type of teaching, they answered unanimously: "It's great!".

What do the pupils think about the second-hand clothing store?

The Civic Education lesson encouraged our pupils to think, and most of them to change their minds! The teacher designed a lesson that was entirely focused on the pupils and their activity. She managed to combine topics from sustainable development, civic education and technology. The teacher started the class with an auction of two scarves, then they researched on the tablets what second-hand clothing stores are. Then they played the game "Barometer", a kind of debate, in which the pupils moved around the classroom depending on whether they agreed or disagreed with the statement. After that, the teacher announced to them the written bids of the auction and it turned out that the scarf from the second-hand clothing store was more in demand! Of course, the pupils did not know which scarf was new and which was used! The pupils broke a lot of prejudices during today's lesson!

Digital applications in foreign language teaching

Technology is all around us, children spend a lot of time on cell phones and other digital devices, pointing out how fun it is. On the other hand, pupils often complain that school lessons are uninteresting. What would happen if digital technology and games were implemented in the classroom? The answer came from the pupils of the third and sixth grades who, together with their teachers, tried different digital applications, used mobile phones and computers, but all for educational purposes! Pupils played memory games, puzzles, quizzes, scanned QR codes, listened to songs, completed crossword puzzles, and made posters. They worked individually, in pairs and in groups. Laughter resounded in the classrooms, the pupils were motivated, involved, actively participated in class, had fun and learned a lot!

Rhythm on recycled paper

Books are meant to be read, but what about them when they become old and in such an edition that they can no longer be read? The solution was found by the pupils of the sixth grade under the guidance of the art teacher! On the old pages of books, they drew rhythm - a person in motion. In the end, they combined all the works on one large paper. Our pupils once again showed how art and sustainable development go perfectly together!

Real animals

As part of the Erasmus project Be GITA and the Animal Rights teaching unit, our 6th grade pupils from Civic Education visited the houses for free-living cats in our city Rovinj. The pupils fed the cats, donated food and water bowls and took food to them. In agreement with their teacher, the pupils will bring clean water and food to the cats several more times during the year. We are all looking forward to the next meeting!

Participation in the competition "Italian Film Festival Scuole & Giovani 2024"

Pupils Ian Sošić and Nina Džaja, under the mentorship of teacher Karmen Bošnjak Torić, participated in the competition "Italian Film Festival Scuole & Giovani 2024" and won an honorable mention. They competed in the category Italian language – language of the social environment. The pupils made a short film in Italian called "Viva la diversità". The film is about two friends who compare Italian and Croatian culture, and in the end conclude that diversity is a wealth that should be appreciated!
